When last we met, Graph had taken a beating from his tail, Athena left Marks on the mayor's doorstep, and Marks had just run into the bar and told Kashmir he needed his help (Kashmir, of course, thought it was a fine idea and went with him). Kashmir and Marks are now running down a flight of stairs, and bursting into the mayor's basement.
Sir Ryath-en has just entered town on a Pegasus and checked in his MD weapons. Athena is at the sheriff’s office, giving a report of the fight with the bandits. Sheriff Ron tells her to keep the items she recovered from the body as payment. Graph re-enters the bar and orders a burger. Nikola is taking a nap.
Marks opens the door and Kashmir walks through cautiously. Sitting primly on the floor is Mayor K. Remington, drawing something whilst chanting. Marks follows on Kashmir’s heels.
Sir Ryath-en enters the leather shop with a freshly-slaughtered deer, and suggests a trade, before feeling the presence of great evil near, as does anyone else with Sense Evil or Sixth Sense. Everyone in town, even those without psionics, feels a strange chill. The Cyber-Knight leaves in a hurry to seek out the source.
Marks gets around Kashmir and runs for the mayor with his knife. He bounces off of something solid. Kashmir realizes she is drawing a Summoning Circle, and chanting Power Words.
Athena and Ryath-en both discover the trouble is coming from the mayor’s house; Athena tells the sheriff to come along; Ryath-en runs for his weapons and suggests the guards follow.
Marks and Kashmir hear a disembodied voice: "What is your wish Mistress?" Mayor: “Kill them." Voice: “Is that a WISH?" Mayor: "Yes, yes, I wish for you to kill them!" Marks yells: “KILL HER!” To which the materializing form responds: “YOU are not my master.” Marks: “We will see…” Kashmir identifies the demon as a Black (Earth) Jinn.
The Jinn attacks first with a punch meant for Marks. Marks parries and shoots silver bullets from both revolvers. Losing a great deal of PPE and half of his ISP to the Psi-Stalker, the demon cuts his losses and teleports away. Marks promptly begins casting a spell. Kashmir is baffled. Kashmir says: "Ummm, I didn't think Psi-Stalkers could absorb spells as well as Energy." Then he mumbles: "Maybe master was wrong...".
Kashmir casts Paralysis: Lesser on the mayor’s vocal cords to prevent further chanting. She uses a disembodied voice to cast Encase Object in Stone on one of Marks’ revolvers. Marks growls and attempts to smack the mayor in the head with the chunk of rock, but instead bounces off a barrier. The mayor then Encases Marks’ other revolver. His response is to shriek. The mayor attempts to cast Petrification on Marks, but he saves. The mayor then casts Chasm, and both men fall. Kashmir takes the impact, but casts Levitation on Marks. Saving Marks also saved his spell, so Negate Magic goes into effect. The chasm closes, but fortunately, Kashmir is able to levitate himself out of the way. (That could have gone badly; thanks alot buddy…) The barrier protecting the mayor also is negated.
Ryath-en and Athena arrive on the scene, their respective posses hanging back to see what happens. Athena uses See Aura and finds nothing suspicious. Ryath-en says: "What's going on in here? I felt a powerful supernatural presence." Marks draws his laser knife, and the mayor encases it in stone. Kashmir backhands the Mayor and feels that she’s easily taking mega-damage. Athena also goes in for a punch, and is parried. Ryath-en attempts to use Telepathy on the mayor, to determine why she is being attacked, but he feels instantly blocked. Marks gets wise and avoids the mayor’s line of sight by positioning himself behind the Battle Cat before drawing his Thunder Gun. The mayor punches Athena and deals out MD. Kashmir attempts to cast Trance; the mayor saves. Athena entangles the mayor’s punching arm. Ryath-en covers the mayor’s face with a massive paw. Marks continues to shadow the Cyber-Knight. The mayor kicks Athena, and she parries with a shin. Kashmir casts Trance; the mayor saves. Athena instructs Ryath-en to knock down the mayor. Sir Ryath-en takes her advice and tackles. Marks goes in and starts groping for skin-contact on the villain. The mayor uses Telekinesis: Superior to fling the Cyber-Knight across the room. Kashmir casts Trance; the mayor saves. Ryath-en, still uncertain what is happening, yells to the guards to bring restraints. Marks Mind Bonds. Ryath-en tackles again.
During this time, Graph has been making his way across town, having finished his dinner and seen a posse of guards run by. He enters and sees a big armored cat on top of a lady, a psi-stalker holding her ankle, and an Amazon holding her arm. A Ley Line Walker stands nearby, looking quite unsure what to do with himself. Graph yells: "What in tar nations are you doing?" Athena answers simply: “She’s possessed!” So Graph plants a foot on her chest and says: "Well get a priest or something." This inspires Ryath-en to verbalize what he’s wondered all along: "What's going on here? This woman doesn't register as being possessed. Why are you all fighting?" The mayor pleads "Please, let me go! I'm just an innocent victim in all this." And her words seem to all as truth. Kashmir attempts Trance yet again, and yet again the mayor saves. Marks stands up, "She is co-habitated by an entity, godly to her knowledge, but she offered and wanted it to. It’s her "Gift of Union." The mayor maintains her illusion of innocence. Kashmir kicks her in the head, and Marks casts Magic Net, trapping the mayor and they Cyber-Knight within.
The sheriff runs in to see all of this. He yells "WHAT. IN. THE. HELL!" as he pulls his guns. "Step away from the mayor RIGHT. NOW!"
Marks: (Sneers and taps his head.) "I know EVERYTHING about you up in here, bitch!" (He then looks at the Sheriff.) "You want to know all about her?"
Sheriff: "I want to know what you're doing to her."
Marks: "Just trussed her up. Sorry I didn't include the bow."
Sheriff: "I want everyone to step away right now" (he points one gun on Graph, and the other on Marks)
Kashmir: "Sheriff, this is a Summon Jinn circle. Jinn are malevolent creatures of magic; she was summoning a Jinn when this one (points to Marks) and I came here."
Marks: "Sheriff, you want me to get inside your head again?"
Sheriff: (looks cautiously at the circle) "I don't know what that is, or what it does. But I did just see a valued member of our community get attacked by a handful of punks. I'll say it one more time. Step away from the mayor."
Kashmir and Marks attempt to explain things to the sheriff, who argues that there is no proof to their claims. He then uses the radio to tell the deputies to “Send the wizards.” Marks tells him some of what was in the mayor’s head, that the wizards work for her, and the sheriff says, in the same disembodied voice that spoke for the mayor: “You. Shall. Die.” Marks wastes no time and casts Carpet of Adhesion on him. The voice then says: "Well THAT didn’t go as planned...STILL! You will die!" Marks says: “It takes two to tango, buddy, and you ain’t going anywhere.” The sheriff collapses.
As soon as the Magic Net dissipates, the mayor runs for it. Kashmir runs and tackles her, and as he does so, he notices that she feels much more fragile than before. Kashmir announces that she is mortal.
The guards and deputies then start to file in, and tell the party to surrender. Graph is argumentative and intimidating and, long-story-short, ends up in the only MDC structure of the town: a cell in the sheriff’s office, thanks to Kashmir’s first successful Trance spell of the evening.
For quite some time, the crew goes back-and-forth arguing whether the mayor is a threat or not. Ryath-en suggests finding a psychic, but if there are any present in town, they do not advertise. It’s just as well; most present would never consent to a mind probe, even to disprove they were possessed by an Alien Intelligence, anyway.
The sheriff stands a short time later, very confused, asking where he is and what he missed. The group explains what happened, and the argument of what to do about the mayor continues. He does not want to believe his friend is anything but a victim, but after being shown some of what Marks found in her mind, and listening to the Cyber-Knight interrogate her, Sheriff Ron finally agrees that it is not worth the risk of inviting such an evil being back, and he announces that the best thing to do is execute her.
Ryath-en argues that it’s unwise to rush into an execution with so little evidence. Ron answers: "I live to protect this town. If one of our own compromises its safety, it's my duty to end the threat. If I'm wrong...I suppose I'll suffer the consequences." He then leads her upstairs, takes her out back, and unceremoniously puts a bullet in the base of her skull without much warning to anyone else.
