Sir William The Tiger Odyssey Of A Knight (Part 1)
November is not usually this cold, the wind howled and ripped harshly through his clothes, the sleet swirled around him. Every crevice and corner of his garb was a trap where the snow would pile up and spill over. The wind moaned again sending a rush of snow at him, turning quickly to the side he tried to shield himself. The trail was very hard to follow, and was getting harder by the minute, and he wasn’t even sure he was going the right way. He was starting to realize that leaving was a bad idea, but this was his only chance. He should have left home in the spring, then he wouldn’t be hiking through this cold. He always loved the summer.
It was hot out, it always was around this time of the year. Dinner was cooking downstairs he could hear the telltale rattle of dishes and cutlery as his brothers set table. He had no idea what he needed, the order would give him all he needed he supposed, all he would have to pack for his journey. Kara lied on his bed and propped her face up with both of her hands and watched her brother intently. “Jacob says you are going away for a long time, why?” He sighs and tells her that it is something he has to do, its something all men have to do, they have to leave home. “But why? Why cant you live on the farm with us? Papa is a man and he does…” He shook his head, she’s to young someday she will understand. At sixteen years old he barely understood himself. He tightened the string on his bag and stood up. As he turns to walk away his younger sister hopped off the bed and wrapped her arms around his legs and pressed her cheek into the back of his legs. “Please don’t go!” He assured her that he would be back, and that he would always love her. He slung his back on his back and walked out of the room.
The dusty stairs creaked as his brothers and him walked down them, the cellar smelled of musty damp earth and parched hay. Solid shafts of light shot though cracks of boards overhead, as the boys descended down the short staircase. The youngest closed the hefty cellar door, it fell with a low thump, with a metallic clank as the steel latch danced on its mooring plate. Slowly they walked through the jumbled mess of old equipment and furniture, trying not to make a sound or knock over a unnoticed table, lamp or jar of mothers pickles beets. As their eyes adjusted to the dark they could make out a figure sitting against the wall, slumped forward much like their father after a hard day on the field. “Whoa, is that it?” remarked one of his brothers, the other two nodded at their younger sibling. “Papa says it used to be great great great great grand pappy’s, and Papa said great grand pappy used it to protect this town that’s why we have the farm.” They crept closer to the suit of body armor. Dust encompassed everything, it sat thick on the armor, making it looked as if it carved out of the wood and earth that wrought the bowels of the cellar. Reaching out he wipes the dust away from the chest of the armor, four large bold letters marked the breast of the armor, N.E.M.A.
Reaching up to the top cupboard, his father stretched his heavy arm, grabbing a bottle half filled with some brown liquid. “You sure this is what you want to do son?” his father pulls small glasses out of the cupboard below it, and places it all on the table. He reassures his father that he has thought about it for a long time, and that he knows its what he wants to do. His father fills each glass with five ice cubes, griping rims of the small cups in his left hand and the bottle in his right. “Your leaving tomorrow son, I just wanted to sit and talk with ya, let you know some things I want to tell ya son.” He placed the glasses down and he sits across from his oldest son at the table.
The family gathered at the doorstep, he took a few steps forward and turned around, his mother in her favorite sun dress her arm around her husband. His father stood next to her, his right hand was on his brother Jacob’s shoulder, now the oldest son of the house. Jacob stood between Kevin and Kara the twins. Kara sniffled back a runny nose, she had no more tears left, she had been crying since after church that morning. He told them all he would come back to visit them, then he looked in his fathers eyes for a second. He knew if he looked harder he might start crying too. With that he turned and walked over to pickup truck with large wrench on the door. An operator, Zeek and his family had been saved by a Cyber Knight two years ago, and after he heard that William was going to try and become one, he told William that he would drive him. He said he would take him far as Pine Bluff and that Cyber Knights passed by there all the time, and from there he shouldn’t have any trouble getting to their monastery.
It had been almost four months since then, and this is the closest he has gotten to being a Cyber Knight. It was getting late, the wind was letting up and the snow had started to fall gently around him. The cold was still with him, instead of a sharp penetrating cold it had turned into something that weighed on him, a constant pressure that forced the warmth from his extremities. With the howling wind gone the crunch and squeal of the snow underfoot was all he had heard. The trail of horse tracks he had been following were now gone, thoughts of going back nagged at him and made everything all that much colder. Going back would mean that he would have to answer to his employer on why he left his job. That meant his rent might go up or worse he might finally get that beating he had been promised. He saw what happened to the drunks that caused trouble or wouldn’t leave. He knew that a kid wouldn’t have made a difference to the man, he would hit him just as hard with what ever was closest. Besides he didn’t tell William that a Cyber Knight had come in. How many could have passed through in the last four months. No he could never go back. Then he started to feel sleepy, the feeling in his hands and feet had left long ago, if he could find a place to rest, a cave anything he may even be able to start a fire and warm himself. Then he saw a sign, a small town was a mile ahead, he could see some of the town and it looked like it had been attacked by some horrible force years ago. He hiked up to one of the buildings, the door had been kicked in, parts of it lay on the floor and part of the wall was blasted off. Stories floated to the surface from the depths of his mind, stories about haunted places like this. Places where necromancers harvested their ilk, where ghosts drifted and zombies stumbled from their graves to reap revenge on the living they so admired and envied. Still the house provided shelter, and there was enough wood around to build a small fire, he could camp here for the night. Tomorrow he would decide what to do.
