Our story begins on a rocky dirt road, approximately two hours’ drive from Mission, population 600, in what was once southwest Idaho. It is early spring and already hot. The weather is clear, and it is late afternoon.
Athena, a lovely young Amazon, is driving to town, accompanied by her adolescent godson Diego. A leatherwing and rider buzz the truck, and Athena prepares to open fire. The leatherwing continues on to town, and the rider waves playfully. Athena is annoyed.
Mission is surrounded by an 8-foot wall and the gate is guarded. Visitors are asked politely to turn in all MD weapons, but are encouraged to keep their armor and SDC weapons. There is a building in which the weapons are stored, and a small gravel lot for vehicles. There are stables across the street. Athena notices an ATV and a leatherwing, tied to a really big post, in the lot.
Athena’s first priority upon entering town is finding laundry facilities, and a nice hot shower. She finds both at a nearby hotel, but not without first surveying the townsfolk who are out-and-about, because she feels watched. Noone looks threatening, but there is a feral (by which I mean obviously not CS) dogboy, who she nods to, knowing he will recognize her as a supernatural creature. She secures a room and is informed that the availability of hot water is all thanks to Ms. Remington (whoever she is) bringing the town out of the dark ages with solar power.
Doc, the dogboy, is on his way to a bar for a meeting with K. Remington about a job. The specifics are vague, but he’s sure it has to do with his medical skills. He noticed the Amazon as they passed on the street, and also felt a psychic presense nearby.
Next to enter town is Trevor, a human gunfighter. He engages the guard in conversation as he is informed of the town rules, and asks about job opportunities. Afterwards…he heads on to the bar where he orders a drink, flirts with the barmaid, and is treated to free pie.
Doc orders a drink and is taken to a back room to meet with K. Remington, a plain-looking D-Bee (most likely elf) who appears to be in her thirties by human standards. Her clothes are elegant and expensive, and she exudes confidence. She explains to Doc that she does indeed wish to employ his medical services for the benefit of the community. She warns him that the facilities are “Spartan” (boy are they!) but that the town is in need after the “retirement” of their former doctor. She gives him a key to the “hospital” and asks him to consider the position. They will meet again in the morning.
On his way out, he nearly crashes into Athena, who is on her way in. Recognizing one another from the street, they exchanged greetings and introductions. Doc goes on to check out the medical facilities, or lack thereof, and Athena and Diego order dinner. Trevor attempts to exchange pleasantries with the Amazon, but she is uninterested, and makes no attempt to hide her level of annoyance. They talk, but Athena keeps her knife at the ready.
Marks enters the bar, takes the first empty table, and is immediately brought a glass of water. The barmaid asks if he’ll have his usual, and wrinkles her nose in mock disgust. He sips his water slowly and she returns with a warmed-but-raw burger, no bun, on a bloody plate. He tears into it with ferocity. He licks the blood from his fingers and plate when finished.
Doc re-enters the bar and regards the psi-stalker (Marks). He orders whisky and a burger “touch more cooked than the fella over theres is tho.” He nods in greeting to Athena, then keeps an eye on Marks. Marks grins at Doc.
Suddenly, a young man bursts into the saloon brandishing a revolver. He points it at Marks and announces “You! You killed my sister!” Doc reads the newcomer’s surface thoughts, which are simply “I am going to kill the psi-stalker!” and he is fairly certain he has the right guy. Marks raises an eyebrow and asks, “Who?” using intimidation (the guy wets his pants a little).
Meanwhile, Trevor rushes to attack…and promptly trips over his own shoelaces. The guy ignores Trevor and continues the dialog: “My SISTER, you bastard!” Marks responds: “And I'll repeat, who?" Athena takes Trevor’s neural mace "You might hurt yourself there bigboy. I’ll give it back...later." Marks says: "Care to take our "talk" outside, boy? There are women in here" the guy agrees, and they go to the street. Doc and Athena prepare to do damage control.
The “fight,” if it can be called that, is over quickly. Marks draws his .44 first, and his challenger dodges the shot. Marks fires again, and the challenger fails his dodge and takes 9 MD to the body of his armor. Marks’ next attack is a called shot to the head. The challenger fails to dodge, and is not wearing a helmet…he takes 3 MD to the head, which liquefies the squishy bits. Doc checks vitals on the headless corpse, and confirms that it is in fact dead. Marks looks for an ID on the body and finds none. He returns the wallet and takes three bullets from his challenger’s gun.
The sheriff arrives moments later, questions the party briefly, and removes the body from the scene. Doc follows to assist. Trevor asks about law work and is told to come by the Sheriff’s office in the morning. Athena and Doc agree to meet for breakfast after his meeting with Remington. The barmaid gives Trevor a room key.
