When last we saw our player characters, Grease and Doc were talking business and Trevor was working his deputy gig. Marks had convinced the Sheriff to let him talk to Remington, and Athena was keeping an eye on him. They walk next door, to the saloon. Nikola was more than ready for dinner and rest.
Graph, the Grackletooth, approaches Mission. At the gate he sees a couple of guards moving (what’s left of) the bandit carcasses. He turns in his weapons, parks his crotch rocket, and yells for beer. He gets strange looks from the townspeople, and eventually finds the saloon.
Meanwhile, Kashmir is arriving via the ley line 11 miles out of town. 30 minutes later he also enters through the city gate, and sees a bloated leatherwing, who apparently gorged herself on the bandits. He has no MD weapons to turn in.
The sheriff asks the barkeep if Remington is around, but she has already left. Sheriff Ron leaves the rest to Marks, as he cannot dissuade him anyway. Athena and Marks see Nikola, who they talk to briefly, and a very obviously drunk and/or insane Grackletooth who keeps yelling at the barkeep, and arguing with his tail. The bar is otherwise empty, aside from Barmaid Becky.
Not finding his quarry, Marks leaves, and Athena follows for everyone’s safety. There is a tense moment when Kashmir and Marks meet in the street, as is often the case when an individual with high PPE and a psi-stalker find themselves in the same vicinity. The exchange is neither friendly nor violent, and both continue on their respective paths.
Kashmir enters the saloon and orders three burgers. The barmaid is impressed, and says she’ll give him a discount if he can eat them all. He downs the burgers quickly, along with a big piece of pie. He orders two more burgers.
Athena and Marks arrive at K. Remington’s estate, and are shown in by an elderly woman who tells them her mistress must still be at work. Marks makes an effort to be calm, and Athena asks some unobtrusive questions. When the old lady leaves the room for refreshments, Marks explores the house astrally, and finds strange markings on the basement floor. When she returns:
Marks: (Smiling) “Thank you, but after this, I must go. I cannot wait on the mayor for long."
Woman: "Alright. Shall I give her a message?"
Marks: "Just that the sheriff would like a word with her. We are here on his behalf."
Woman: "Consider it done"
Athena: “Thank you for your time Ma'am”
Marks: (Looks at the old lady, glaring, and stands up.)
Athena: (Leaves to go see what Diego's doing)
Woman: (Looks taken aback) "Is there a problem?"
Marks: "I think so, Mayor."
Woman: (Looks confused) "My name is Myra, but I don’t think I told you that..."
Marks: (Pointing at her.) "What are you, Mayor, where you can change your shape? I sense no magic on you."
Woman: (Looks at Marks like he just stepped off the crazy train)
Marks: (Narrows his eyes even more.) "I'm guessing no one else knows this about you."
Woman: (Leans in close and whispers) "What are you talking about?"
Marks: (Reaches out to touch her and Mind Bonds. Looking into her mind he discovers she truly was but a harmless old lady.) “I'm sorry, I was mistaken.”
The old woman is horrified by what she sees in Marks’ mind. She screeches and runs into the house. She has also acquired a neurotic fascination with death.
Marks walks back to the saloon, hoping to find the mage. Kashmir is in fact still there, performing an impromptu pre-Rifts style rock concert with Graph, complete with pyrotechnics. Marks stares in morbid fascination, uses telekinesis to make the Grackletooth’s tail twitch, and telepathy to say (in the tail’s voice, of course, “Hey, this is your tail, your singing sucks." Graph retorts: “Shut up and rock ya no good prehensile digit!" while Marks approaches Kashmir purposefully. He makes one more telepathic comment: "Sit the hell down, you asshat, and drink more beer. And stop playing with me, I'm a respectable tail mind you. Sheesh!"
Marks sits down next to Kashmir and shows him a sketch of the markings he saw in the mayor’s basement. Neither of the men recognize them, but they seem to be incomplete. The Grackletooth is still being loud, so Marks uses telekinesis to smack him with his own tail. Graph starts smacking his tail around. The altercation gets quite loud, as well as violent. Marks and Kashmir leave to get another look at the symbols.
Graph and Tail take it outside, and start to draw a crowd. Tail wins initiative, and attempts to bitch slap Graph. Graph parries and attempts a karate punch, but Tail parries that. Tail then attempts another bitch slap, but Graph parries. Graph bites his tail, which hurts. Graph screams out: "You low down cheat that hurt!" The tail is limp. Graph holds it up high and proclaims: “I AM THE LIZARD KING!!!" He gives his tail a drink of Tequila, which stings, and throws it over his shoulder. The limp tail then does a sneak attack, and trips Graph. He hits the ground hard and puts his tail in what looks like a headlock (but being a tail, it’s hard to say).
Marks and Kashmir walk to the Mayor’s house and let themselves in.
Meanwhile…
Grease is poking around town, using his street skills to get a taste of the shadier business in Mission. He reports to his wilderness scout, tells her the plan, and returns.
