Hey,
My name is Brent. You may have heard of me either from places like the Pally website (back in the day...I have been gone from there a long time) or from Cafe Risque or Nekky's site as Writer's Block. I am currently (as of this writing, in May of 2010) playing "Rumi" in Nekky's Rifts Japan game, and I am also the guy who wrote the anticipated and cancelled "Hardware Unlimited" (wya...WAY back when) that was advertised by Pally for about three years...
This is the latest in FOUR attempts to get this game to happen, and the second try as an online incarnation.
First off, I am still in the planning stages of this game...but the main thing I am lacking is players (something Nekky is trying to assist with this time around). A lot in my life is sort of up in the air right now (stuff with my house, my job may or may not be a permanent position, etc) so I have no set start date yet. I DO REALLY WANT to run this game, but just so you know it is not a "starting next week" sort of thing...I am aiming for some time in early June 2010 if I can find players I am happy with.
Second thing, your level of experience with AD&D is NEITHER a boon nor a liability. Not in this game. Allow me to explain.
See, I play with a lot of long time gamers. I myself have been gaming since 1986 or so (am I REALLY so old the date escapes me?), and some of that is campaigns that, with original characters, span over two decades in running time. Needless to say, some of the gamers I play with, and have played with, have become somewhat jaded in their age and experience.
I remember the feeling the first time I really got involved and "into it" when I gamed; how it was more than stats and knowing how to min/max stats and abilities. When any monster we faced (ANY monster...I remember a huge flock of squirrels quite fondly, and a giant squid defeated but not slain...) was new and exciting. Now, when everyone has faced it all and read every book, the monsters have become pitable creatures the PCs face with the attitude of a math problem..."Oh, It has thse abilities, plus these saves, and these resistances, so many hit points, and a particular number of items and spells to defeat it...
And that was just the info the PLAYERS had. Their characters may or may not have known any of that.
And that is what I started to notice...the PLAYERS reacted, no matter how well they roleplayed the character reactions, in specific ways to specific information and presentation.
THAT is when I got the idea to take a scenario back to its roots.
I wanted the ADVENTURE of old; the unknown, the alien, the strange. So I set about to create a game that gave others that feeling.
That is the idea behind Challis.
I will use AD&D (2nd Ed) and its source materials as a framework. On the other hand, the world will be one of my creation, the monsters, while keeping familiar names and such, may be totally different or exactly as you would expect them. I will be playing with stats, abilities, and much much more. I have created a new mythology, new religion, new gods and more.
PCs will be fledgling heroes again, not world conqueoring power munchkins.
PLAYERS will be as in the dark as the PCs as the characters ADVENTURE and explore a strange, new world full of UNKNOWN and NEVER BEFORE SEEN threats and challenges.
This is what I envision for Challis.
I plan , with this game, to bring some of the shiny back into gaming hearts.
If you are interested, contact me or Nekky as described herein.
