General Physical Description: While the town heart-throb back in the hamlet he lives in, in Machiste city he is somewhat less outstanding. His imposing height and powerful frame make him stand out, certainly, but most are often too busy focusing on those features to notice his craggy good looks. The bulk of his muscles stretched out across his long frame, he doesn't bulge like a circus showman, but there is a broadness and definition to his tone that leaves little room for doubting his strength.
Body type: Strapping
Facial characteristics: Strong and serious is the cast of his face, yet dreamy and even a little vacant are often his eyes. It's little wonder that people in Machiste city dubbed him The Ox when he began to make his visits, for he shares both the power and the absent minded nature of the animal's expression. In focus he can be quiet fetching and in anger very frightening, yet most take away from his face a rather docile and gentle creature.
General Mode of Dress: Despite his new career as a warrior and would-be Champion, he still dresses like a blacksmiths son, in simple garments; tunic, breeches, boots, and thick leather gauntlets better suited to forge work than travel. The expense of dyes beyond his reach, his clothing is rarely colored, often leaving it in muted shades of white or gray. Far more outstanding than any dye however is his cloak, a great and bushy bear-skin with twisting iron clasps and a hood made from the beasts head. Golden-brown in fur, it is a garment fit far more for a prince than a peasant.
Adventuring Garb: The same as his regular outfit, along with his armor.
Additional Features: None
Actual Age: 16
Apparent Age: 16
Life span: 109
Personality
General Disposition: Berend has always been a fairly quiet soul, rarely given to outbursts or great shows of excitement. Reflective, thoughtful, slow both to anger and to speak, many who meet him gain the false impression that he is slow-witted as well. There is a fairly sharp mind within him, as some have realized, but it often gets burried under day-dreams and idle fantasies. Despite constant self-reflection and great desire, it was only recently that he discovered he had the ability to actually do and not merely dream and the concept has excited him as much as anything seems to. Though his pace can be a bit plodding, once he has fixed a goal for himself, he presses on with it with constant and inexorable intent.
Known Objectives: To become the King's personal guard, as his many-times great grandfather once was.
History
Known background information: Berend, known more commonly as Ivo, is the only son and scion of the Panzer family, a moderately well known clan of blacksmiths from a hamlet some miles away from Machiste city. Berend's great-great-great grandfather was a man known only as Eckhard, "The Hard-Edge," a warrior of some fame and personal guard to the Machiste king who died protecting the king from a wild boar during a hunting expedition. The result was his family being granted a small plot of land where they have lived and worked ever since, first as armorers and then blacksmith when that failed to turn a livable income.
Berend grew up a dreamer, deeply in love with the stories of Eckhard and often found alone, playing out fantasies of battle and glory. He learned the family trade only out of obligation and without interest, excelling more in the menial physical labors of lifting and hauling than in the actual smithy work. Quiet, but popular and friendly, he became somewhat known in Machiste city from an early age when trade fairs and festival days would draw he and his father out. Without horse or oxen to pull their wagon, it fell largely to Berend to do the hauling and the sight of the tall young man slowly, but persistantly hauling a wagonload of iron horseshoes or even an entire anvil lead him to be dubbed 'The Ox' by some in the city. While only a seasonal visitor, he gained a reputation as a good heart for often allowing tired travelers to pile into his already heavy cart and carrying them into town and could usually be counted on to unhesitatingly answering any request to help moving or lifting heavy loads.
Recent Activities: Few had any real appreciation for Berends strength until the night his parents, worried he was destined for a life of indolenc and sin, arranged for him to be taken in by the village priest. When, barely out the door, they found themselves confronted by a massive bear known as Tederich who had been haunting the area for years, the priest fled and left the boy alone to face the bear. Despite that he seemed doomed to die before his parents terrified eyes, Berend clouted the beast across the head with a length of wood and killed it in a single blow.
As a result, his life took a vastly different turn, carrying him away from the church and cementing his desire to follow in his famous ancestors footsteps. Tederich's hide was turned into a cloak for him and Valrundi, the sword of Eckhard kept as a family heirloom for generations, was given to him by his father. A fairly short time later, after a brief apprenticeship under the tutlage of the village constable, a former soldier, Berend left his home to seek employment from the king in Machiste city, his reputation as at least a bear-killer having already reached ears there.
